Little Black Dresses Never Go Out Of Style

Fashion trends come and go, but like diamonds, little black dresses are forever. First popularized by fashion icon Coco Chanel in the 1920s, the LBD is a must-have in every woman’s closet and Elle.com has plenty of style suggestions for women hunting for their own look.
Victoria Beckham created red carpet buzz in a full-skirted black dress from her own Spring 2010 collection, and fellow Brit Kate Winslet chose a form-fitting little black dress by Narciso Rodriguez for a recent movie premiere.
Ali Marie Kahn, a Los Angeles stylist who has chosen clothing and accessories for magazine shoots and American Idol judges, encourages women to look for little black dresses made to go the distance.
“Stay away from certain fabrics like polyester and fabrics that fit into one season, like wool blends. The little black dress should be seasonless,” Kahn says. Accessories are also important, so add that pearl necklace or grandma’s vintage broach to the look.
A woman should also have a party dress for all seasons. Flirty, kicky and fun, party dresses come in an array of colors and styles for every body type. BCBG Max Azria’s selection of party dresses includes ruched metallic blue taffeta mini dress and a cobalt blue ruffle front dress. Vivienne Westwood’s Grecian-inspired party dress forms to the bodice and ends just above the knee in a fuller skirt. A party dress generally skim the knee, but for those who are heading to a pool party or a soiree by the sea, long dresses work just as well. The vintage-inspired What Goes Around Comes Around collection shows a silk chiffon maxi that sparkles thank to swaths of gold.
It’s not quite as festive without the right ensemble, so why not skip the jeans and opt for a favorite party dress or one of your favorite little black dresses? Check out elle.com for more tips on picking the right one.
